The Razès in the Aude
Just 20 minutes from Carcassonne airport and 50 minutes from Toulouse, it’s not hard to see why the Razès has become such a popular area with house-buyers from overseas. A renovated village house with some outside space in this area would cost about 160 000 euros and a modern villa with a pool upwards of 200 000 euros.
The Razès forms part of the wine-making area of the Malepère and is to be found to the north-west of Limoux. It is characterized by hilltop, circular villages which have striking views of the Pyrenees. Villages such as Alaigne, Cailhau, Hounoux, Fenouillet-du-Razès.
I live in one of these little villages and, until recently, it lay undiscovered, leading nowhere as it does. But during the past couple of years clients have actually asked if there was anything for sale in our village. So, I guess the secret’s out…
Few of these villages have shops these days - though Alaigne does have a bar and a small supermarket - but all have the baker’s van arriving each morning and travelling shops (fishmonger, butcher, greengrocer) during the week.
The villages are grouped around the bustling little town (or large village…) of Belvèze-du-Razès which boasts two supermarkets, an excellent butcher, newsagent, baker, hairdresser, post office and café. At the last count, there were four doctors, a dentist and an osteopath too. For the outdoor types, there are tennis courts, football pitches, an open-air swimming pool and a lake.
